Internally they use in colics, as warming tonic, to increase peripheral circulation in narrowing of arteries. The tea made from the rhizome is a folk remedy for stomach cancer. It is useful for dyspepsia, enteritis, flatulence, gastritis, insomnia, meteorism, neuralgia, rheumatism and ulcers. It is also used for nervous headache, as diaphoretic and expectorant. In tincture five drops, three times daily, it produces disgust for liquor, also for atony of different organs, dyspepsia and nervous headache, in chronic bronchitis to increase expectoration (William Boericke). An extract of the root has shown anti-inflammatory effect. Reported specific for Buerger's disease (a condition that narrow the artery of hands and feet). A recent study has indicated that the essential oil from root exhibited antiseizure effect. The antiseizure effect may be attributed to the presence of terpenes in the essential oil. Very recently, another study has shown that the extract of the drug is decreased the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in frontotemporal lobar degeneration and dementia with Lewy bodies.
